Jonathan is a scientist for a local manufacturer that employs a large percentage of the small town where he lives. Until recently, Jonathan loved his job. However, it has been discovered that the company is releasing small amounts of toxins into the local river. Jonathan is extremely bothered by this information. Based on what you know about Jonathan, describe the cognitive dissonance that he is experiencing and two ways that Jonathan can alter his behavior or attitude to reduce the dissonance.
Cognitive dissonance is a situation in which a person has two but contradictory beliefs.
Here Jonathan, on one hand, thinks that his firm is doing well as it is giving employment to a large percentage of the people in the given town while on the other he knows that the firm is dumping toxins in the river which would adversely affect the population of the town. He has a cognitive dissonance about the good and the bad thing his firm is doing.
In order to reduce this dissonance:
1. He can collect more information which can overweigh his beliefs. For example, he can collect more data or information about the adverse effects of these toxins. If he can find information saying "small amounts of toxins are not yet proved to affect humans adversely" would reduce his dissonance.
2. By giving lesser importance to the beliefs (about toxins) over the truth and positivity would also help in reducing the dissonance which would be by thinks that the firm is giving employment while the amount of toxin is quite less.
