For this activity, you will be creating a confidence interval for the average number of hours of TV watched. Last semester, my MAT 152 online students asked the question, “How many hours of screen time do you have in a typical week?”

Please use the data they collected to answer the following questions. Data: 21, 2, 28, 30, 18, 21, 25, 20, 25, 14, 21, 25, 50, 39, 46, 20, 35, 45, 37, 46

Name at least 2 ways this data could be biased and hence the confidence interval would not be a good estimate of the population mean. Please provide an explanation of how you arrived at the answer.

Solutions

Expert Solution

  1. Self Selection Bias which is possible whenever the group of people being studied has any form of control over whether to participate.
  2. Exclusion Bias results from exclusion of particular groups from the sample, e.g. exclusion of subjects who have recently migrated into the study area.
  3. A common cause of Sampling Bias lies in the design of the study or in the data collection procedure, both of which may favor or disfavor collecting data from certain classes or individuals or in certain conditions
