Skeletal muscle: changes that are possible to skeletal muscle and under what circumstances
SKELETAL MUSCLE CHANGES :
Skeletal muscle can change its Size to compensate for the work load.
1) HYPERTROPHY : Skeletal muscle undergo hypertrophy i.e. increasing cell size in response to increased stress on the muscle. Growth in size of the muscle is also associated with increase in the size of ther organell.
E.g. Weightlifing Exercise, Athlets
2) ATROPHY : It is decreased muscle mass. It can occur due to apoptosis of the cells. It can occur due to Immobility, Loss of nerve supply, malnutrition, ageing etc.
3) Dystrophy - It is progressive disorder of the muscle in which a previously normal muscle gradually becomes weaker and weaker due to breakdown of the muscle fibers.
E.g. Congenital muscular dystrophy like Duchen muscular dystrophy, Bekers muscular dystrophy.
4) Myopathy - It is defective muscle fibers leading to dysfunctional muscle since birth.
E.g. Poliomyositis, Pompe's disease.
