Sex education among school going children has raised ethical debates and controversies ever since awareness was spread. But in todays world, with the rate of teen pregnancy at its rise and spreading of STD and STI, imparting sex education is inevitable. With this being said, the group and the topic that are discussed should be carefully selected.

Here are debates regarding the pros and cons of sexuality education:

PROS

  1. Information about STD and STI: the symptoms and treatment
  2. Abstinence: not having sex altogether
  3. Safe sex: using protection to avoid sexual problems
  4. Birth control: methods to avoid pregnancy

CONS

  1. Against moral and religious beliefs: bring awareness can hurt the sentiments of parents who otherwise avoid the topic within the household
  2. Not taking the education seriously: some students are ashamed or even feel guilty to hear about sex. others may not pay attention.
  3. Encourage to engage in sex: introduction of preventive methods could promote sexuall activity
  4. Untrained educators: their education can deviate from facts

It is important to be aware that the average teen pregnancy age is 14-15 yrs old. That is why topics such as sexual activity, planned family, safe sex methods and birth control should be addresed only from Junior high/middle school onwards and abstinence should be stressed. Elementary students should be taught basic human/sexual anatomy, social hygiene and gender identity.
