Can precipitation using a water softener determine water hardness? Demonstrate with a sample calculation using 15 mL of hard water and .101g of postassium carbonate as a softener.
The water softener is a removal of calcium and magnesium and other certain metal cations in hard water. The resulting soft water is more suitable for soap, water softening is mainly done by lime softening or ion exchange resins .hardness is mainly due to calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese so if we want to soften the hard water we will use some of the softner so looking into the precipitate we can we can say about hardness of water and their ease to remove them.
NOW,
The volume of hard water=15ml
weight of potassium carbonate=0.101gm
total hardness of water=(0.101*1000)/(0.015) Mg/L or ppm
total hardness of water=6.734*10^(-3) Mg/L or ppm
