Questions #13-14
For each experiment and treatment group given, describe (a) an appropriate control group and (b) how you would ensure that the control group and treatment group are identical (except for the variable being tested).
13. E. coli bacteria are normally killed by ampicillin. You hypothesize that giving E. coli a certain fragment of DNA will make it resistant to ampicillin. For a treatment group, you use E. coli that are given a chosen fragment of DNA.
14. You hypothesize that eating one orange a day prevents people from being infected with Rhinovirus (one of the viruses responsible for the common cold). For a treatment group, you use a group of people to whom you give one orange a day. You do this for a week before intentionally exposing them to Rhinovirus.
13. . You hypothesize that giving E. coli a certain fragment of DNA will make it resistant to ampicillin. For a treatment group, you use E. coli that are given a chosen fragment of DNA.
For a treatment: give fragment of DNA
for control: E.coli not giving DNA fragment
Control variables:
1. both treatment and control E.coli are same type (wild type) not have any mutation
2. both groups are grown on same media
3. you will use same types of ampicillin for screening
4. provide same environmental condition to each group
in this experiment for results both controls and treatment E.coli cells will grown on ampicillin containing agar plate and if we will see that the treatment E.coli growth. but control E.coli cant grow on ampicillin medium.........so we can conclude that given DNA fragment is ampicillin resistance gene, so treated E.coli resist to Ampicillin but controls are not.
14. You hypothesize that eating one orange a day prevents people from being infected with Rhinovirus
For a treatment: group of people to whom you give one orange a day.
Control:not give one orange a day to group of people
Control variables:
1. for contol and treatment you should to use same age of people
2. for both group keps gender similar ( if use female in treatment so you require to use female in control)
3. provide same environmental condition to each group
After experiment complete if the treatment group will not infected by virus and control group infected by virus so your may hypothesis will true...
Thank You!
