Describe the methods for expressing the concentrations of solutions like molarity and molality?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans:

Molarity: It is defined as the moles of solute present in 1 L of solution and it denoted by M.

Molarity changes with temperature because the volume of solution changes with temperature.

Molarity: It is defined as the moles of solute present in 1000 gms of solvent and it denoted by m.

Molarity remains constant with temperature because the mass of solvent does not change with temperature.

Molarity is defined as the moles of solute present in 1 L of solution whereas molality is defined as the moles of solute present in 1000 gms of solvent.

Chemists often use molarity M, in moles/liter, to measure the concentration of solutions. Molarity is a common unit of concentration because the volume of a liquid is very easy to measure. However, the drawback of using molarity is that volume is a temperature-dependent quantity. As temperature changes, density changes, which affects volume. Volume markings for most laboratory glassware are calibrated for room temperature, about 20?C. Fortunately, there are several other ways of expressing concentration that do not involve volume and...

Molarity is the concentration of chemical solutions. It is the number of moles of solute dissolved in a liter of solution. It is denoted by M, and the unit is moles per liter, which can be written as molL. molarity of a solution= moles of soluteliters of solution Molality of a solution is the amount of solute divided by the mass of the solvent (not the mass of the solution). It is also defined as the number of moles of...
