What Does PXE stand for and what are the benefits?
PXE stands for Preboot Execution Environment. It allows computers to boot up remotely through a network interface.
Benefits
1. It enables a client machine to boot from a server independent of the hard disk and operating system.
2. PXE allows system resources to be distributed among several machines.
3. It allows many different users to use a specific program on separate terminals without having access to administrative tools.
4. The client machines can be rebooted in the event of hardware or software failure. This allows the administrator to diagnose and fix the problem.
5. Since PXE is vendor independent, new types of computers can be easily added to the network.
What is Reliability Monitor?
Windows Reliability Monitor is a windows application that assists you in the identification of software issues in the Windows operating system that may affect the system performance and reliability. It allows to view the stability history of your computer. It allows the user to monitor the previous warnings and past critical and informational events.
Windows reliability monitor is located inside the Control Panel under System and Security/Security and Maintenance.
Any time an application hangs or crashes, Reliability Monitor tracks the history of your computer. It allows you to check on each day that has a crash and go back in the list to before all the crashes started and figure out what was installed to make the things break and to remove it from the PC.
3. What are PXE and Reliability Monitor used for and their Benefits?
PXE allows a workstation to boot from a server on a network prior to booting the operating system on the local hard drive.
PXE provides three things
1. The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol which allows the client to receive an IP address to gain access to network servers.
2. A set of application program interfaces that are used by the client's BIOS or downloaded Network Bootstrap Program that automates the booting of the operating system and other configuration steps.
3. A standard method for initializing the PXE code in the PXE ROM chip or boot disk.
Reliability Monitor is useful for identifying the stability issues on Windows system by reporting key system events such as
i) application crashes
ii) software update installation
iii) unexpected system shutdowns
iv) Blue screens
v) Driver installations
vi) Hardware failure
It uses Power Shell Remoting to retrieve reliability data from remote computers and display it in an event-log style grid format. It can also generate a system stability chart, which uses a reliability metrics to give an overview of the stability of the system overtime.
