Which of the following describes an apical symport system in the membrane of a renal tubule cell?

Select one:

a. Na+/glucose transport

b. Transport of CO2 from blood into cells

c. Na+/H+ transport

d. Na+/K+ transport

e. Transport of water into cells

Solutions

Expert Solution

a. Na+/glucose transport

Explanation -

The symport mechanism is the type of facilitated diffusion system .Symport diffusion mechanism when two or more substance diffuses through membrane at the same time. The symport and antiport mechanism maintains the concentration gradient across through ATP pumps. The active secondary transport occurs when Na+ ATPase pump on the basilar membrane of the nephron tubules helps in pumping out the Na+ ions and thus maintains the electrochemical gradient. On the opposite side of the basilar membrane i.e at the apical side Na+/glucose symport protein chhanels functions in influx of Na+ and glucose together into the cell with respect to activity at the basilar membrabe i.e Na+ moves down the concentration gradient mediated via basilar Na+ ATPase pump. Following to the glucose travels across the basal membrane into the interstitial space and move their way to the peritubular capillaries.

Renal physiology (select the INCORRECT statement) Vasopressin regulates the permeability of the apical membrane of collecting duct cells by increasing the exocytosis of aquaportin-2 vesicles. Vasopressin is synthesized by hypothalamic neurons with long axons that extend into the anterior pituitary. The vasopressin receptor on renal collecting duct cells is a G protein-coupled receptor located on the basolateral membrane. A person with central diabetes insipidus could be therapeutically managed with injections of vasopressin.

a part of a membrane at rest showing the transport of glucose using the glucose-Na+ symport protein. We know that the average mammalian cell has a cytosol chemical concentration of roughly 15mM of Na+ as compared to its extracellular concentration of 154 mM.
