  • Medullary pyramids can be defined as the paired white matter arrangement of brainstem's medulla oblongata which consist of motor fibres of corticospinal and corticobulbar tracts-called collectively as pyramid tracts.
  • ventral part of medulla oblongata have medullary pyramids.These both spine shape structures move along the extent of medulla oblongata and is edged medially by anterior median fisssure.They each are having a anterolateral sulcusthrough their lateral edges,where hypoglossal nerve comes out from.
  • In the sides of every pyramids a noticeable bump called as olive.The fibres present in the posterior column,transfer sensory and proprioceptive details,are situated back of the pyramids on medulla oblongata.
  • Medullary pyramids are having motor fibres which are called as corticobulbar and corticospinal tracts.Corticospinal tracts are present on the anterior side of medullary pyramids.These tracts helps in the transfer of motor signals which arised in precentral gyrus and moved along the internal capsule to medulla oblongata and the pyramids.
  • The extrapyramidal tracts are the motor tracts which will not cross the medullary pyramids.
