Using the Method of Moments (MM) for a data fit investigation to a distribution

i. Find an estimate for the Exponential distribution parameter.

ii. Find estimators for Gamma distribution parameters.

iii. Find estimators for Normal distribution parameters

iv. Write down the log-likelihood function for the normal distribution (only in terms of the summation with the correct indexes) and calculate its value in R using the maximum likelihood estimates of µ and σ

v. Assess the fit of these three distributions to the empirical distribution for the time elapsed by presenting all three fits on to a cumulative probability graph. Which model would you recommend? Why?

vi. Select the best model among the tested models via AIC.

Based on data that was collected over the past several months, the average time between arrivals to the Emergency Room on a Monday between the hours of 7am to 7pm is 35min. Emergencies occur at random, and hence the arrival of patients to the Emergency Room follows a purely random process. What probability distribution would you use to model the time between patient arrivals? Suppose a patient just arrived, what is the probability the next patient will arrive in less...

A common argument from contrarians of the human impact on global warming about the increase in CO2 levels of the atmosphere is that the increase in carbon dioxide by humans is only a small percentage of the total sources of emitted CO2. In other words, the argument is that humans cannot be the cause of the increase in warming of the climate since the added emissions is a small percentage of what is added to the atmosphere from natural forces...

The Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA collected data from 203,967 incoming first-time, full-time freshmen from 270 four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. 71.3% of those students replied that, yes, they believe that same-sex couples should have the right to legal marital status. Suppose that you randomly select freshman from the study until you find one who replies "yes." You are interested in the number of freshmen you must ask.
