Which of the following component of semen is produced in the prostrate?
Fructose
Angiotensis II
Kininogens
Clotting proteins
D) Clotting Proteins
Explanation:
Composition of semen
Most of the fluid in semen is made up of secretions from male
reproductive organs.
Semen contains:
-citric acid,
-free amino acids,
-fructose, enzymes,
-phosphorylcholine,
-prostaglandin,
-potassium, and zinc.
-45 to 80 per cent of the fluid is produced by the seminal vesicles.
-13 to 33 per cent by the prostate gland.
-5 per cent from the testicles and epididymis.
-2-5 percent from Bulbourethral and urethral glands.
Volume:
semen volume per ejaculate is around 2 to 3 ml or more. Sperm
constitute approximately 10% of semen volume.
Smell:
A chlorine smell or fishy odour in semen is normal.
Taste:
Semen tastes slightly sweet due to a high content of fructose. The
taste of semen tends to change slightly from person to person and
may be affected by diet.
pH of semen
The pH ranges 7.2 to 7.8.
Function of semen:
-The fluid excreted by the prostate makes up about one-third of the
total volume of semen and contains various enzymes, zinc and citric
acid. Though prostate fluid is slightly acidic, another fluid in
semen made by the seminal vesicles leaves semen slightly alkaline,
or basic. This alkalinity helps protect sperm and prolong their
life after they are deposited in the acidic vaginaa
-Spermatozoa are produced in the testess. They mature in the epididymis. The testess also produce testosterone and inhibin.
-Fluid from the seminal vesicles accounts for approximately 70%
of semen volume. The seminal vesicles are the source of fructose in
semen.
-Fructose is used by the spermatozoa as an energy source.
-The prostate gland supplies about 20% of the volume of semen.
Its fluids include acid phosphatase and clotting enzymes
lead to coagulation and subsequent liquefaction of semen.
-
The prostate also contains most of the IgA found in semen.
-The bulbourethral gland produces mucoproteins that make up about 5% of the volume of semen.
