Valtrex is a prodrug, meaning it converts into another drug inside the body. After we take a tablet of Valtrex, it’s converted into the active substance acyclovir. Acyclovir inhibits DNA polymerase.
Acyclovir is a structural analog of dGTP. when binds inhibit DNA replication-chain extension.
One of the top reasons to use Valtrex vs. acyclovir for cold sores is because of its higher level of oral bioavailability. Acyclovir is almost completely broken down by the liver when taken orally, whereas Valtrex has an oral bioavailability level of approximately 50 percent compared to approximately 12 percent for oral acyclovir. This means that more of the drug makes it into our body, helping to control a herpes outbreak and reduce our risk of transmitting the virus.
