9. Valtrex is an effective drug for treatment of genital herpes outbreaks (HSV-1) as well as for other herpes infections. Explain how Valtrex works, how it interferes with the virus life cycle, and why it is superior to the older drug acyclovir.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Valtrex is a prodrug, meaning it converts into another drug inside the body. After we take a tablet of Valtrex, it’s converted into the active substance acyclovir. Acyclovir inhibits DNA polymerase.

Acyclovir is a structural analog of dGTP. when binds inhibit DNA replication-chain extension.

One of the top reasons to use Valtrex vs. acyclovir for cold sores is because of its higher level of oral bioavailability. Acyclovir is almost completely broken down by the liver when taken orally, whereas Valtrex has an oral bioavailability level of approximately 50 percent compared to approximately 12 percent for oral acyclovir. This means that more of the drug makes it into our body, helping to control a herpes outbreak and reduce our risk of transmitting the virus.

9.Clinical trials of Oxycoting. Oxycoting is a drug used to treat pain, but it is well known for its addictiveness and danger. In a clinical trial, among subjects treated with Oxycotin, 52 developed nausea and 175 did not develop nausea. Among other subjects given placebos, 5 develop nausea and 40 did not develop nausea. Use a 0.05 significance level to test the claim that the proportion of people that develop nausea is greater among the people that take Oxycoting.
