K-Mart also had glory years in the 1960’s (started the same year as Wal-mart and Target, all of them copying Sol Price’s discount stores around San Diego then that also directly inspired Costco, Sam’s Clubs, Price Club, etc.) and 1970’s, getting into groceries a decade or two before Wal-mart and Target with it’s own “supercenters”. They regained some ground by finally building their own brands with licensed brand names but managed to lose so much ground despite pioneering many of the models that it’s another case of terrible managers following excellent ones. The loss of the thousands of smaller locations, the Kresge discount stores designed to compete with Woolworths, cut into the significant purchasing power and advertising media buying advantages K-Mart had that Walmart and Target/Dayton Hudson lacked for decades.
