Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Canada is a classic example for effectively implementing change. The change was the shift from the traditional paper usage to the use of the Electronic Medical Records (EMR). The healthcare professionals of CHEO were hesitant due to its advanced technologies. However, the management has implemented this change successfully. The result was that CHEO has successfully registered all of its patient’s records in the software solution. Additionally, more than 75% of CHEO healthcare professionals in the outpatient clinics used this software for ordering tests and document the progress of the patient treatment. Let’s see how CHEO implemented this change: The change management team had a detailed and realistic plan to switch to EMR. Then, adequate training was provided to the health care professionals to use EMR. Practice sessions were conducted in the usage of EMR. After EMR went live, the training team continued to provide support end users which made them confident in using the new EMR.
Nokia is a typical example for effective change management. NOKIA, manufacturer of mobile phones exited the industry in 2014 because of the loss the company was facing. The once dominant market leader NOKIA decided to sell its device business to Microsoft. NOKIA’s core business today is networking equipment. The change is transitioning from the mobile device manufacturer to the networking equipment. The result was that NOKIA has a steady increasing rate of the share price, enterprise value has grown 12 fold, returned billions of dollars to its shareholders and finally became the most valuable company now. Lets see how NOKIA implemented this change-NOKIA was already a partner with Siemens who is a manufacturer of the networking equipment. NOKIA’s management realized that networking equipment was a better business strategy. Thus, the company bought out Siemens and formulated new portfolio strategy. The company had a new corporate structure which supports the new portfolio, had a detailed business and operational plan, capital structure to effect this change and an active management team to successfully implement this change.
Conclusion- A change can be implemented successfully if there is a comprehensive plan which addresses many aspects of the restructuring and right leadership team.
