An 11-year-old boy presents to the emergency room (ER) with a 4-inch laceration on his right arm. He was with his friends doing bicycle stunts when he fell off his bike and cut his arm on a rusty nail from the ramp. In addition, his wrist is swollen, bruised, tender to touch, and warm, with limited mobility. He will most likely need stitches to close the laceration and a splint for the sprain.
In your initial post answer the following questions:
1. This boy is on early adolescence period and the developmental tasks of competitive and cooperative play. Children are active and play with their peer groups and motivated with their peer groups. They try to stay on their own legs and they try to seek advice from friends than parents. Their attention span is increased and able to understand opinions of others. They try to involve games rather than toys. These types of children involve games in running, climbing, that is muscle used activity.
2. Explain the boy regarding the infection that causes earlier signs and symptoms such as fever, abscess, pain, skin color changes. He chances to have gangrene as a result of an injury if he has weak immune system such as diabetes, poor nutrition. Children chances to have septicemia because of infection and depend on the immune system, taking precaution, follow up care, type of injury, immunization such as tetanus vaccine. If he has weak immune system as a result of diabetes mellitus, smoking history, obesity, faulty nutrition can precipitous infection and cause loss of limbs due to low circulation to the affected limbs. In addition if untreated and inadequate precaution earlier it causes tissue destruction and disability.
