A CCGT uses natural gas of net calorific value 50.05 MJ/kg as the fuel is utilised in a gas turbine power plant fitted with a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) in its exhaust. There is a single gas turbine, which has a net power output of 176 MW; the exhaust gas from that turbine is fed into the HRSG which in turn is used to supply steam to a steam turbine.

The operating details for the gas turbine are:

Compressor inlet pressure: 100 kPa Compressor pressure ratio: 15:1

Ambient/air inlet temperature: 300 K

Turbine entry temperature: 1400 K Turbine exhaust pressure: 120 kPa

Isentropic efficiency of the compression is 88%, and that of expansion is 92%.

The operating details for the steam side are:

Turbine entry steam pressure: 50 bar

Turbine entry steam temperature: 450 °C

Condenser pressure: 0.1 bar Pinch point temperature difference: 25 °C

Turbine isentropic efficiency is 90%; neglect the feed pump work.

a. Find mass flow rate of the natural gas to the combustion chamber,

b. mass flow rate of air in the compressor,

c. and the mass flow rate of gas in the turbine and thermal/cogeneration efficiency.

A fired heater uses natural gas as fuel which is burned with 25% excess air. 90% of the fuel burns to give CO2, 4% burns to give CO, and the rest is unburned. (a) Calculate the molar composition of the feed (fuel + air). (b) Evaluate the composition of the flue gases on dry basis. Hints: Air composition may be assumed as 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen on molar basis.. Natural gas may be assumed as 100% methane

Consumer Energy Corp. is an electric utility that uses natural gas to produce electricity. If the firm does not hedge its exposure to natural gas prices, it will have taxable income in the coming year of $80,000,000 if the market price of natural gas is “low” and -$20,000,000 if the market price of natural gas is “high.” The probability of each outcome is 50%. A small gas turbine uses C8H18(l) for fuel and it enters the combustion chamber at 25◦C whereas air coming from the high pressure stage is at 287◦C . The products of combustion leave the combustion chamber at 1167◦C . The fuel is injected at a rate of 0.95 kg/min where it is mixed and burned with 400 % excess air. An analysis of combustions reveals that all the hydrogen in the fuel burns to H2O but only 90% of the...
