What is a pilot cell? What purpose does it serve? How do you set up a pilot cell?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Pilot cell is a selected cell whose temperature, specific gravity and voltage of electrolyte are assumed to indicate state of charge of the entire storage battery of which cell is a part.

By looking at the readings and parameters of pilot cell, one can know the state of whole battery pack .

A pilot cell of electrode 27, 29 is inserted in lead acid type battety. The electrolyte should contact only the inner surgace of electrodes. The voltage over the electrode plates is measured, at the same time the voltage of reference cell is measured. By these measurements, remaining charge of battery can be Calculated.
