Can someone "dumb this down" for me.
"the most hopeful part of the new Common Core standards is that they reject the instructional malpractice that prevents public schools from fulfilling their historic mission of producing literate American citizens who know something about their country's history and it's republican heritage. "
I'm having trouble summarizing this article. thank you.
I will try and simplify it, with the best of knowledge I have about the above mentioned topic.
Common core standards is a set of voluntary k-12 standards in English language,arts/literacy, mathematics. The satndards were developed by governor and state school officials, with input from wide range of educators, content experts ,national organization and community groups.
After common core was introduced there were lots of appreciations as well as critisisms raised. The above mentioned extract is stating one such advantageous point. It is stating how common core standards are better over normal education system delivered in public schools in America.
It states that instead of an education system that produces literate American citizens who know something about their country's history and Republican heritage at the end of completing schooling, it is always better what common core standards does to a student,by making them ready for college.
Common core standards also has few other advantages :
- common core puts creativity back in classroom.
- common core helps students explore a concept and really immerse the student in that content ,so that they emerge with full understanding that lasts well beyond testing season.
- demands more critical thinking of concepts in studies
- common core thus gets student college ready with advanced, collaborative and student friendly educative approach, unlike old education system which tough history and expected children to learn from history.
