Dual-Stream Hypothesis of Audition:
What are the two-streams and what are their functions? What is their relative position along the temporal lobe? Be prepared to reason about the two different streams in vignettes of case studies and/or hypothetical experiments.
The two stream hypothesis is based on neural functioning of vision and hearing. Firstly, introduced by David milner and melvyn A. Goodale in 1992.
The two streams are- 1). The ventral steam- the” what stream” . It’s function is with identification of objects and recognising objects.
2). Dorsal stream- the “ where stream” . It’s function is processing spatial location of any object in accordance to speech.
The ventral pathway emerges from primary auditory cortex. In this the sounds are processed and this information passed to visual ventral stream. This takes place near the middle temporal gyrus and temporal pole.
In dorsal pathway information enters from primary auditory cortex to posterior superior temporal gyrus and posterior superior temporal sulcus. The dorsal pathway is located between the temporal and parietal lobes at their boundary near sylvian fissure.
