Complete and balance the following equations for gass-evolution reactions.
(NH4)2SO4 (aq) + KOH (aq) ------>
Express your answer as a chemical equation. Identify all of the phases in your answer please.
First you have two N's...
Put a two in front of NH3.
Nitrogen is now balanced.
(NH4)2SO4 + KOH > K2SO4 + 2NH3 + H2O
You have 9 hydrogens on the left, and you have 8 on the
right.
I recommend you write water (H2O) as HOH, it makes it a lot easier,
and keep the hydrogens as one group and hydroxides as one group. So
that would mean you have 2NH3 and HOH on the right side, so you
have 7 hydrogens. On the left you have 8. Well you can add a 2 in
front of the HOH to get you 8.
(NH4)2SO4 + KOH > K2SO4 + 2NH3 + 2H2O
Nitrogen and hydrogen is now balanced. Now to the SO4's.
That's already balanced!
Now to the K's..
1 on the left and 2 on the right, add a 2 in front of the
KOH.
(NH4)2SO4 + 2KOH > K2SO4 + 2NH3 + 2H2O
Now all are balanced. (Remember, writing water as HOH will help A
LOT). You have 2 OH's on the left and 2 on the right.
Your final answer:
(NH4)2SO4 + 2KOH > K2SO4 + 2NH3 + 2H2
