What are the goals of terrorism? What kinds of terrorism are there? What have been some responses to terrorism?
Terrorism is a strategy used by individuals to achieve a specific end. Terrorism is a strategy used by a small group that inflicts violence and tries to create fear in the targeted population. Terrorism is often followed by violent actions that are intended to provoke a reaction from the target. Terrorists often try to justify their actions in the name of social or economic unfairness or do it in the name of following spiritual or religious principles. Some terrorists groups take inspiration from particular religious beliefs. Example, the ISIS and the AL Qaeda justify their actions by claiming that they are attacking individuals who are non-believers. Some of the goals of terrorism are to create intense fear in the nation, to engage in violent actions in order to attract public and media attention, to harass or embarrass an organization or government, satisfy vengeance. There are several type of terrorism such as state terrorism, political terrorism, narco- terrorism etc.
State terrorism refers to the violent actions undertaken by the government in order to achieve particular goals. This type is often used when dealing with a conflict with a foreign country. There are several ways of carrying the state terrorism such as using weapons, toxic chemicals in order to instill fear in the citizens. Political terrorism refers to actions taken by a party in order to make political or ideological statement. This is usually done in order to protest against a government policy or act. Religious terrorism is done to promote religious ideologies or practices. Such type of terrorism is extremely dangerous due to fanaticism where individuals are ready to sacrifice themselves for the cause. They often use tactics such as suicide bombings
Measures taken to combat terrorism are complex. Some strategies may work for a specific type of terrorism than others. for example, when dealing with religious terrorism, partnering with religious leaders and building relationships with them can help with the situation. Taking out the leaders and members associated with the terrorist networks is considered an appropriate approach for fighting against terrorism. Facilitating the exit of terrorist groups and networks and helping them to integrate peacefully back into the society may help end terrorism.
