What is Biomedical investigation Ontology (OBI), what it is used for, and what it consists of (components)?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ontology for biomedical investigation(OBI) is an open access, integrated ontology for the description of biological and clinical investigations.

  • The primary use of ontologies in bioinformatics has been the annotation of database records.
  • It has a rich underpinning of computational logic.
  • Supports the annotation process by automatically checking for consistency as well as enabling rich querying over data repositories.

OBI components:

Most of OBI classes are subclass of some BFO(basic formal ontology) class.

Ontology has scope of modelling all type of biomedical investigations as such it contains some of aspects:

  • Biological material-for exp,blood plasma
  • Instrument-for exp,microarray.
  • Information content-such as image or a digital information entity such as electronic media record.
  • Design and execution of investigation-for exp, study design, electrophoresis.

In a biomedical study with rats, a dose-response investigation is used to determine the effect of the dose of a toxicant on their survival time. The toxicant is one that is frequently discharged into the atmosphere from jet fuel. For a certain dose of the toxicant, the study determines that the survival time, in weeks, has a gamma distribution with α = 5 and β = 10. What is the probability that a rat survives no longer than 60 weeks?

An investigation of the properties of bricks used to line aluminum smelter pots was published in an article. Six different commercial bricks were evaluated. The life span of a smelter pot depends on the porosity of the brick lining (the less porosity, the longer the life span); consequently, the researchers measured the apparent porosity of each brick specimen, as well as the mean pore diameter of each brick. See the table. Brick Apparent Porosity (%) Mean Pore Diameter (micrometers) A...
