Aluminum Profile

Aluminum profiles are the geometries and sections made through the aluminum extrusion process, the example we can take from the automotive industry where the body panels of the vehicles are made up of aluminum by the extrusion process. The aluminum profile method makes it suitable for mass production as it is very compatible with modern automation technologies with robot-assisted manufacturing.

The manufacturing method for aluminum profiles

The most suitable manufacturing process for aluminum profiles is the 'extrusion' process. In this method, a predefined cross-sectional profile is made from a prefabricated die or mold, the raw material is inserted in the die and by application of a huge amount of force from a hydraulic powered ram created the desired geometry or profile.

Types of extrusion process

  • Cold extrusion - It is done at room temperature and produces higher strength due to cold-working, alow for minor tolerances, superior surface finish. Mainly suitable for aluminum, tin, copper , titanium, some soft steels.
  • Hot extrusion - It is done at elevated temperatures precisely above the recrystallization temperatures it avoids work hardening and easier to press the material in the die, mainly suitable for harder metals.
  • Warm extrusion - Done at temperatures below the recrystallization temperatures.

Material for manufacture product

For aluminum profiles the suitable size of 'aluminum ingot in the form of billet. Aluminum ingots are preshaped pieces of pure material which is then used in the secondary manufacturing process. For example, soft drink cans are made from ingots circular thick discs which then extruded in the form of cans.

Dumas Method Experiment: In this experiment, we measured a flask with an aluminum foil and elastic band set up then added 4mL of methanol inside the flask and sealed with the foil covering and boiled in a water bath until all the liquid vaporized (this will drive out any air in the flask and push out all excess vapour). Then we cooled it to let the vapour condense and reweighed the flask with the vapour in it. The following questions...
