What are the two types of discourse and What are the two types of Argument?
The two types of discourse are:
(i) Narrative – This type of discourse involves a narration or telling of a story. The primary features of this type of discourse are use of characters, use of plots, a prominent setting upon which the narration is based and point of view of a first person or a third person.
(ii) Descriptive – This type of discourse involves communication through use of descriptive words and phrases. Use of sensory images is also prominent in this type.
There are other types of discourse like persuasive, argumentative and expository.
Two types of argument are:
(i) Deductive arguments – These arguments are a form of reasoning in which the conclusion has to be true if the premise on which it is based is true and if the logic is sound and good. To give an example of this type of argument consider that Mr. Richard lives in Texas. Texas is in USA. Thus it can be safely concluded that Mr. Richard lives in USA.
(ii) Inductive arguments - These arguments are a form of reasoning in which the conclusion is reached by making use of few observations. These observations are then used to make a generalization. On the basis of this generalization the conclusion can be very likely but not certain. To give an example of this type f argument consider that Messi (a famous footballer) has always scored a goal after his return from an injury. Thus Messi will score a goal in his next match that he will play after his current injury. The conclusion the Messi will score a goal in his next match after he recovers from his injury is a highly likely conclusion but not a certain conclusion.
