What are the types of Cancers and their cures? What are the survival rate? What countries are most affected by cancer?
Types of cancers can be classified on the basis of:
1. Their basic cancerous nature
2. The tissue/organ affected by cancerous growth.
Since almost every organ of the body is affected by cancer, it is somewhat unrealistic and cumbersome to classify types of cancer on the basis of type of tissue affected. So, the general classification of types of cancer is made on the basis of basic nature of cancerous cell. This classification with appropriate examples can be as tabulated below:
Type | Cells involved/Examples | Cure |
Carcinoma | Epithelial cells/ Breast, lung, colon, prostate, pancreas etc. | Chemotherapy, site-directed medicinal treatments |
Sarcoma | Connective tissue/Bone marrow, mesenchymal cells etc. |
Transplants, chemotherapy |
Leukemia or lymphoma | Blood cells / blood cancer | Chemotherapy, blood transfusion, gene therapy, bone-marrow transplant |
Blastoma | Blastocyte origin/ Infantile cancers of various types | Chemotherapy, blood transfusion, gene therapy, bone-marrow transplant |
Germinal cancer | Germ cells (pluripotent cells cancer)/Testes, ovaries | Chemotherapy, blood transfusion, gene therapy, bone-marrow transplant |
Survival rates in various cancers depend upon:
1. The clinical diagnosis made
2. The stage of patient acquiring clinical aids
3. Availability of appropriate treatment
4. Sustainability of the patient to the therapy
The survival rates of patient is very low in infant stages and in advanced stages of cancer. These survival rates are as low as 20 % in infants to 15 % in adults having advanced stages of cancer.
According to demographic data acquired in 2010-12, countries such as France, Denmark, Australia, USA, Belgium etc are among highest risk of cancer.
