Topic- COVID-19 and industrial relations
Problem or issue –The pandemic COVID-19 has a significant impact on the industrial relations. The manufacturing organizations have faced severe financial losses due to COVID-19. The issues faced by the industrial organizations are safety of the workers and employers, changes in the schedule, wage and hour’s issues, layoffs, loss in sales due to less consumer spending, supply chain issues and financial losses due to stoppage of work.
Solutions- The solution to handle the pandemic COVID-19 are:
- Avoid lay-offs and schedule work with social distancing such as 50-50 workforce to avoid work stoppage
- Inventory to be manufactured should be minimal and this would avoid complete stoppage of work. Once the world learns to live with the pandemic, then the operations can be increased slowly.
- Supply chain issues can be handled effectively with diligence. The government has allowed intra-state carrier service. Hence, supply of goods within the states can be initiated.
Best Solution- The best solution is the first option wherein the manufacturing facilities can avoid lay-offs by providing a 50-50 workforce to maintain social distancing. This would avoid infections to spread. Also, this would avoid the workers suffering from loss of pay.
The other solutions are good however they have slow progression. Though the intra-state carrier service is allowed, there is a possibility of virus spreading through the delivery boys or the packages.
