Which one of these compunds

Aceminephon, Aspirin, Caffein, Salicylamide, Anacin, Bufferin, Excedrin, Tylenol

a-show up under UV light. i.e. which one of these comounds are fluorescent?

b-Which one shows color in Iodine vapor (Iodine chamber)?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Will show up under UV light.

Aceminephon, Aspirin, Caffein, Salicylamide,

The above ingredients are all aromatic compounds and UV active.

Beacuse of the presence of unsaturated double bond in those compounds, it would be active and show color in Iodine chamber as well.

The above compounds can be detected by fluorescence detector.

Anacin (aspirin and caffeine)

The active ingredients in Bufferin are Aspirin + Calcium Carbonate + Magnesium Oxide + Magnesium Carbonate.

Excedrin (acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine)

Tylenol (Acetaminophen)

It would be same for the above drugs as the ingrediens will respond in the same manner.

One tablet of extra-strength Excedrin contains aspirin, acetaminophen, and caffeine. To isolate the three components, you had to extract the solution including ether and the three components first with K2HPO4 and then afterwards with aqueous KOH. However, you mistakenly switched the order of the two extractions. How would this affect the apparent yields and the purity of the aspirin and the acetaminophen?

Is Aspirin polar or non-polar? In my thin layer chromotography lab the aspirin traveled far up the silica gel plate which would mean it's non-polar. But looking that the chemical structure it looks to me like it is polar. Why would it travel up the plate so far if it is a polar molecule or is it not polar for some other reason?
