Consider a concentration cell that is constructed from a 1.0 M iodide solution on the left and a 0.5 M iodide solution on the right, with solid iodine at both electrodes. Select every statement that is true about this concentration cell.

-Electrons are moving from the electrode with the 0.5 M solution to the electrode with the 1.0 M solution.

-As with all concentration cells, the change in enthalpy for the system is zero.

-As with all concentration cells, the change in entropy for the system is negative.

-As with all concentration cells, the net result of discharging the cell will be to absorb heat from the surroundings and convert it into electrical work.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The second law of thermodynamics is concerned with the reversibility and direction of natural events; it states that the entropy of the universe tends to increase. Therefore, all spontaneous events are accompanied by an increase in the entropy of the universe. ie. the change in entropy for the system is positive.

Enthalpy describes changes of heat in a system. If the system absorbs heat during a given process, this process is said to be endothermic, and the change in enthalpy (∆H) is greater than zero (∆H > 0). On the contrary, if the system releases heat, the process is called exothermic, and (∆H< 0).

For present system there is no change in heat of the system, only electrons are moving from the electrode with the 1.0 M solution to the electrode with the 0.5 M solution.(electrons flow from high concentration to low concentration only) in concentration cells.

Converting heat into electrical energy is accomplished by steam turbines only, not by concentration cells.

Answer: statement that is true about this concentration cell.

-As with all concentration cells, the change in enthalpy for the system is zero.
