Of the following compounds ( SO2, C2H6, NH3 ) which of them would you suspect to have the highest; a) viscosity, b) surface tension, c) vapor pressure, and d) boiling point? Please explain

Solutions

Expert Solution

Let's identify the intermolecular forces in all.

SO2 is non polar. So intermolecular force here will be dispersion force. C2H6 is also non polar. So intermolecular force here also is dispersion force. Dispersion force is more in SO2 as compared to C2H6 because of large molar mass of SO2. NH3 will have hydrogen bonding. So intermolecular force is strongest in NH3 and weakest in C2H6.

a) Highest viscosity is one with highest intermolecular forces.

Answer: NH3

b)Highest surface is for one with greatest force.

Answer: NH3

c) Highest vapour pressure is for one with lowest ibterMolecular force since more molecule can escape into gas form.

Answer: C2H6

d) Boiling point will be largest for one with greatest ki intermolecular force.

Answer: NH3
