Expert Solution

An organisation’s workplace policies and procedures are set of rules and regulations that the employees of the organisation such as managers and workers must adhere to during their day-to-day functioning in the organisation. Most of the countries require the employers and businesses to have well documented and comprehensive workplace policies and procedures. All the employees of the organisation, irrespective of their position in the organisational hierarchy, must be trained and made well aware about the code of conduct that is expected from them. When a company have appropriate policies and procedures in place, it helps both the company as well as the workers to protect their respective rights and interests. These policies and procedures helps in establishing the allowed behaviour and rules of conduct within the organisation. The policies can be made on different aspects such as attendance, privacy, employee behaviour, health and safety, dress code, etc. The policies and procedures may vary from industry to industry. Even within the same industry, two organisations may have different set of policies and procedures for their employees to follow.

Well developed policies and procedures can have several benefits for both the employee as well as the employer. One of the most important function of policies and procedures is to act as a guiding manual and a single and credible source of information for the employees. Whenever an employee is in doubt regarding the allowed behaviour within the company, he or she may refer to the written policies and procedures of the organisation. This way the employee does not have to necessarily get in touch with their colleagues or seniors every time to clarify their doubts. From the point of view of protecting the employee’s rights such as providing fair and equal work opportunities, abiding by the employment contract, etc. the company's policies play an important role. In case of breach of contract or any kind of harassment at the workplace, the employee can make use of the organisation’s policies and written procedures to facilitate relevant action that safeguards the interests of the employee.

But, no matter how detailed and comprehensive the policies and procedures of an organisation are, these are only fruitful it they are implemented and monitored properly. Only then, it can offer a win-win situation for both the organisations and the employees.
