Support or refute the argument that Hispanic immigrants are not learning English. Given the growing linguistic diversity of the United States, can English be maintained as the primary language? Should Americans have to change their views about bilingualism?
Language is one of the most important weapons one could carry in their entire life. Language is identified with one’s culture and life. Today, with the increasing global movements of labor has brought new challenges in the countries that have only English as the language. Most of the people who speak English do not know another language because people from all the other countries in the world, learn English.
In my opinion, America is becoming more multicultural society where having one language will only increase instances of racial superiority because language is power. Americans are also ignorant in not introducing second languages in their academic institutions. They don’t want to learn another language because of their superiority complex. When the economic scenario change and a country with another language becomes the economic superpower, they will start learning that country’s language.
In my opinion people who live in the USA and whose mother tongue is not English should learn English in order to improve their opportunities for jobs and settlement. When someone speaks our language we feel happy because we will be able to understand that person well. So, they need to learn English.
The other part of the discussion is that Americans need to learn one of the other major languages and that language could belong to the second major population, may be Spanish, Chinese, Hindi etc. This will ensure that people respect each other in building mutual trust because when one learns another’s language, they have started to accept them as their own.
