1. My definition of counselling is that counselling is a process of guiding an individual, that is, the client of the counsellor in obtaining a solution to his or her problems. It is a technique to reach a solution to a problem by seeking the help of another person, professionally known as the counsellor or the therapist.
Counselling brings insight into a person's problems. The person becomes clear about his issues and the potential or effective solutions of the same. The guidance of the individual is a systematic and trained process that progresses gradually, unfolding the client's issues. The counsellor needs to establish a rapport with the client to initiate a bond for effective communication. The counsellor is generally trained in rapport building, interviewing, testing, and applying therapies to help the client. But counselling has ethical issues of beneficence and non-maleficence (safety of clients), responsibility (clarifying a counselling relationship), integrity (accuracy and truthfulness), justice, and respect.
