Ralph Ellison's "Battle Royak" is a short story written in 1952. It is story about a young black mamm who has recently graduated high school. He live in the south and is invited to give speech at a gathering of the towns leading white citizens. Where he was told to take part in a "Battle Royal" with nine other black men. After the fight and the speech he was awarded with a callskin brifcasebrand a scholarship to the state college for Negros.

The story is all about one black boy's struggle to get ahead in predominantly white society. He tries to accomplish this goal by adherinhato his grandfather's dying words. His grandfather told him "Live with your head in the lion's mouth". In otyerowords his grandfather told him to conform to the white people's way of life in order to get ahead.

From my interpretation I believe that grandfather is warning the Brandon to always fight for his race and the movemntmotowards equality. It provides a glimpse of the kind of treatment that many Americans were subject too, but never spoken about.

The 2 I dont like about the story the treatment of black people and women is terrible. The most important issues in the story was sexism and racism.
