Why can't I use the sum of force(about y axis) =0 at point P? I used this method to get the tension in the cord at first of solution, but gotten wrong answer.

Solutions

Expert Solution

you can't apply sum of force(about y axis) =0 to findout Tension in the cord (T) because tension T on the given frame acts horizontally so if you apply sum of force(about y axis) =0 then only Ay and P=8KN came into the picture in that Ay acting upward and P=8kN acting on downward side so Ay=8KN

If you want to find tension in the cord then apply moment about A is zero (or) take moment about P =0 then

T(0.6)+Ay(2.25)=0

T(0.6)=8(2.25)

T=30KN

So here getting same answer only

please find the detailed solution if you have any doubt feel free to comment.

Two point charges are fixed on the y axis: a negative point charge q1 = -30 μC at y1 = +0.22 m and a positive point charge q2 at y2 = +0.37 m. A third point charge q = +9.8 μC is fixed at the origin. The net electrostatic force exerted on the charge q by the other two charges has a magnitude of 20 N and points in the +y direction. Determine the magnitude of q2.
