Butt-joint welds are used to join two pieces of metal that are parallel to each other. The procedure to be followed can be outlined as below:

1. To ensure proper alignment of the two pieces being weld together and flatness of the finished part, one must “plane” the edges / faces being joint. Care must be taken to see, that any clearance between them is minimal.
2. Clean the area/edges to be welded , so that it is free from dust , grease, dirt etc., using a lint free cloth.
3. The edges to be welded must now be gradually heated up using a weld plate (heating element) against a constant pressure (approx 0.1 Pa: values obtained from tables). This creates uniform internal and external lip.
4. Once the lip has been formed and the part is uniformly heated up, the heating element is quickly removed and the edges to be welded are brought together.
5. Clamp the parts properly, to avoid misalignment during welding. Make sure not to create excessive contact pressure.
6. Perform the weld for the necessary time making sure the weld bead is uniform.
7. Once the welding is done, the part can be removed from the station and allowed to cool. Make sure not to exert any mechanical stress on it before it cools down completely.
8. Finally, the weld can be ground / filed to give a clean and plane look.
