Compare the relative strength of the carbon to carbon a) SINGLE BOND, b) DOUBLE BOND, and c) TRIPLE BOND. What do you think will be the relative absorbance of each of these bonds? Explain the reason for your answer.

In C to C single bond, only sigma bond is present between the carbon atoms.

In C to C double bond, one sigma bond and one pi bond are presen between the carbon atoms.

In C to C triple bond, one sigma bond and two pi bonds are present between the carbon atoms.

So, more energy needed to break the double bond than single bond and more energy needed to break the triple bond than double bond.

The relative strength is as follows:

The energy difference between sigma bonding orbital and sigma antibonding orbital is soo large as compared to energy difference between pi bonding orbital and pi antibonding orbital.
