For the dissolution of NH4NO3, which is greater, the lattice energy or the hydration energy?

For the dissolution of NH4NO3, which is greater, the lattice energy or the hydration energy?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans :-

Lattice energy :- Amount of energy released when a crystalline solid is formed from its constituent ions.

Hydration energy :- Amount of energy released on dilution of one mole of gaseous ions.

# If Hydration energy > lattice nergy, then compound will be soluble in water.

# If Hydration energy < lattice nergy, then compound will be insoluble in water.

Ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) is soluble in water as all the nitrate salts are soluble in water, therefore hydration energy will be greater than lattice energy.

Therefore, for the dissolution of NH4NO3 the hydration energy will be greater than lattice energy.
