Null and research (Alternative) Hypotheses
For comparing two means, the basic null hypothesis is that the means are equal,

with three common research hypotheses,

??: ?1 > ?2 ,
one of which is chosen according to the nature of the experiment or study.
A slightly different set of null and alternative hypotheses are used if the goal of the test is to determine whether ?1
or ?2 is greater than or less than the other by a given amount.
The null hypothesis then takes on the form

The Research hypotheses,
