What is homeostasis ? Draw a simple labelled diagram and briefly
explain what are the components required in a generic homeostatic
system?
N.B. You may draw this diagram by hand or draw directly on the
computer. Please do not copy-paste images from the web or
textbooks. A rough sketch is satisfactory; does not necessarily
need to be coloured or of printable quality.
Homeostasis is the ability to maintain a relatively stable internal state that persists despite changes in the world outside. The greek word means similar and stasis means stability. The human body regulates its internal concentration of hydrogen, calcium, potassium and sodium which are required for normal functioning of the body.
When body temperature rises the thermoreceptors in the skin and brain sound an alarm, initiating a chain reaction that directs to production of sweat and flush
Components of homeostatic system
Change
It is anything that the cell requires to react, such as change in temperature, pressure or chemical composition inside
Receptor
Once the change is made ,its its receptors job to alert the control center to counter act it
Control center
As the control center receives impulses from its receptors it sends commands to the effector to counteract the change in the environment
Effector
The effector acts on the impulses from its specific command center, counteracts the change and returns the environment to balanced state.
