What is the intrinsic parity of a nucleon?
What does the orbital parity depend on? Write
down the appropriate expression for orbital parity.
What is the total parity of a proton moving in central potential with orbital
angular momentum l = 2?
Firstly we understand that a nucleon is either neutron or proton
Parity in quantum mechanics we consider as an operator . If this changes sign of algebric coordinate system then parity is odd(-1) or if it does not affect the coordinate system then system parity is even(+1)
As nucleon neutron and proton tend to pair up and each pair has even parity
But we must consider orbital parity into account
If we have even even proton and neutron, then parity is even
If we have unpaired nucleon then orbital parity = where l is orbital angular momentum
If we have odd odd nuclei , then unpaired neutron and unpaired proton both with angular momentum l1 and l2 respectively has parity given by =
Now last question says total parity of proton with l=2
Hence in this case we have even parity.
