Experts in orbital mechanics have stated that, “It takes 55 times more energy to go to the Sun than it does to go to Mars.” Using the concept of a Hohman transfer orbit, confirm this statement and show your detailed calculations.
A Hohman tranfer orbit can take a space craft from earth to mars. The orbit is an elliptical one with periapsis is at earths distance from the sun and apoapsis at Mars distance from the sun. The transfer orbit had to be timed so that when the space crafts departs earth , it will arrive at its orbit apoapsis when the mars is at the same position in its orbit. Earth and mars align for a Hohman tranfer once every 26 months.
Our planet is travelling about 67000 miles perhour-almost entirely sideways relative to sun.The only ways to get to the sun is to cancel the sideways motion. So it is very difficult to get to the sun.
