Love is a human need like food and locomotion. It is a scarce resource; and similar to other economic goods that assists an individual for happiness. As economists focuses on scarce resources allocation and the cost-benefits thereof, thus there exists a strong foundation for an economic love theory. The four distinct economic pay-offs which love provides to people are material, emotional, hedonistic and spiritual. Love serves material human needs such as procreation, physical relations and food. It also addresses the individual emotional needs for companionship, safety, sharing, and esteem. Love fulfils hedonistic requirements, which are neither material nor emotional, just sheer amusement. Moreover address people spiritual needs. It is possible to assign an economic value with all of such pay-offs by understanding the trade-offs that will actively make people to seek these benefits.
Furthermore there are costs of love. For a new love, cost of search is the cost of energy and time spent in networking, information seeking, visiting singles bars among other practices. For old love it includes the cost of courtship and dating, and the recurring cost of movies and restaurants. It also considers the cost of distractions from studies or career. For failed love, it includes the high emotional cost on being dumped. For successful love, the cost of emotional commitment cost of long-term partnership and cost of gifting. It includes the opportunity cost of giving up one’s freedom, career and life adjustments
