What is a host bust adapter and what is it used for? What is a WWN and what are the types of WWNs?
Host Bus Adapter (HBA): It is a circuit board
that physically connects a host system (like server) to
internal or external storage(like hard disk drives, solid
state drives etc). So it means HBA allows a host system to
connected storage devices to communicate with each other.
We all aware the Network Interface Card (NIC) is used for
connecting a system to LAN , similiarly HBA is
used for a system to communicate or connect with storage
media.
World Wide name (WWN): It is is an unique
identifier used in storage technologies including Fibre
Channel(FC), Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) or Serial
Attached SCSI (SAS). It is similiar to MAC
address on ethernet card here we can say that WWN
number on HBA. WWN is 64-bit address, and if two WWN
addresses are put into the frame header, this leave 16 bytes of
data just for identyfying the destination and source address.
