There are several stages to the manufacturing of shoes. The
stages are as follows:
- Designing: First an overall outline or design of the shoe is
made, show casing the particular style, colour or cut
required.
- Lasting: The lasts of the shoes are developed, these are moulds
which perform the function of fitting of a human foot, all shoes
are made on the basis of this last. The last is of different sizes
in order to make different sizes of shoes.
- Stamping: The leather required on the shoe is marked and cut up
in the pieces required, it is a very technical job, different types
of leather have different qualities, therefore it is important to
pick up the right part of the leather for the right part of the
shoes.
- Stitching: All parts of the leather are stitched together on
the basis of the last and the stamping. The upper of the shoe which
is the part on the fore of the shoe is made first.
- Assembling: All the different parts, materials and heel boxes
of the shoe are put together in this stage.
- Finishing touches: The finishing touches take place in terms of
polishing, if a different gradient of colour is required that is
adjusted, the toe drop off is also adjusted in this phase.
All these operations have to be done in this particular sequence
to be able to put a shoe together with the highest quality and the
most efficient manner.
