2. The surface of a 0.1% C steel gears is to be hardened by carburizing. In gas carburizing, the gears are placed in an atmosphere that provides 1.2% C at the surface of the steel at a high temperature. Carbon then diffuses from the surface into the gear. For optimum properties, the steel must contain 0.45% C at a depth of 0.2 cm below the surface. Design a carburizing heat treatment schedule that will produce these optimum properties. Assume that the temperature is high enough (at least 900°C) so that the iron has the FCC structure.

The Rockwell hardness of a metal is determined by impressing a hardened point into the surface of the metal and then measuring the depth of penetration of the point. The Rockwell hardness of a particular alloy is 70. A new annealing process is implemented with the goal of increasing the Rockwell hardness of the alloy. A test of 50 samples with the new annealing process resulted in a sample mean of 72.1 and a sample standard deviation of 5. Does...

The Rockwell hardness of a metal is determined by impressing a hardened point into the surface of the metal and then measuring the depth of penetration of the point. Suppose the Rockwell hardness of a particular alloy is normally distributed with mean 71 and standard deviation 3. a)If a specimen is acceptable only if its hardness is between 70 and 74, what is the probability that a randomly chosen specimen has an acceptable hardness? Three objects, cylindrical rod (radius = 0.1 m), steel ball (radius = 0.1 m) and flat screen (length = 0.1 m) with surface temperature of 65 ℃ are exposed in perpendicular direction to water flow at 30 m/s and 30 ℃. Assume the area of all three objects are the same as 1 m2 , determine the individual values of convective heat transfer coefficient for each object, and their respective heat loss.

Surface roughness of steel is investigated. The method of surface manufacturing largely determines roughness of the surface. One of the parameters to describe the roughness is Rz, the maximum height of the surface irregularities profile. Rz (in μm) is measured for 21 random places on the surface of forged details and 21 random places on the surface of casted details. Is there evidence to support the claim that the surface of forged steel has a larger surface roughness variance than...

The Specialty Steel Products Company produces items, such as machine tools, gears, automobile parts, and other specialty items, in small quantities to customer order. Because the products are so diverse, demand is measured in machine-hours. Orders for products are translated into required machine-hours, based on time standards for each operation. Management is concerned about capacity in the lathe department. Assemble the data necessary to analyze the addition of one more lathe machine and operator. Historical records indicate that lathe department...

A single-tooth hardened-steel worm has a catalog rating of 2000 W at 600 rev/min when meshed with a 48-tooth cast-iron gear. The axial pitch of the worm is 25 mm, the normal pressure angle is 14.5°, the pitch diameter of the worm is 100 mm, and the face widths of the worm and gear are, respectively, 100 mm and 50 mm. Determine the three components of the load on the worm.
