Can you please write a one page essay on the life and accomplishments of Ellen Ochoa. Thank you!
Ellen Ochoa was born on May 10, 1958 to Rosanne and Joseph Ochoa in Los Angeles, California. Ochoa grew up with her sister and three brothers in a single-parent household when her father left the family when Ochoa was just in junior high school. She had pursued her Master of Science and doctorate degree in electrical engineering in the prestigious Stanford University.
Although Ochoa’s father grew up speaking both Spanish and English, he never did speak Spanish at home because he felt there was a prejudice against people speaking their native language.
Even though Ochoa has won many awards, NASA’s Outstanding Leadership Medal in 1995, NASA's Exceptional Service Medal in 1997, NASA’s Distinguished Service Medal, Harvard Foundation Science Award, Women in Aerospace Outstanding Achievement Award, the Hispanic Engineer Albert Baez Award for Outstanding Technical Contribution to Humanity, the Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award, and San Diego State University Alumna of the Year, and four of NASA’s Space Flight Medals, she took the time and effort to receive an education. The main reason why Ochoa did not have any trouble receiving an education is that because her mother was a firm believer in the value of education and the idea that a person can succeed at anything if he or she tried hard enough. Apart from being an engineer, astronaut, and researcher, she was a very good classical flutist. She is now living in Texas with her husband CEO Fulmer Humes with her two children.
