An investigation is to be conducted to determine the source of reduction in yield of a certain chemical product. It is known that the loss in yield occurs in the mother liquor, that is, the material removed at the filtration stage. It is hypothesized that different blend methods of the original material might result in different yield reductions at the mother liquor stage. T1 is the current blending procedure in use, and the chemical engineers would like to compare this with 3 other methods, namely, T2, T3 and T4. Each of the 4 methods will be applied to 5 batches of mother liquor, and the losses in yield will be measured. Note that each batch is only used once, that is, it is blended by only one method.

Short answers:

a. What are the experimental units and how many are required?

b. What are the treatments and how many are there?

c. Identify the control group, if there is one.

d. What is the response variable?

e. Identify 2 stages in the experiment where the principle of randomization should be applied. Describe how it is implemented in these stages, respectively.

An investigation was conducted to determine the source of reduction in yield of a certain chemical product. It was known that the loss in yield occurred in the mother liquor, that is, the material removed at the filtration stage. It was thought that different blends of the original material might result in different yield reductions at the mother liquor stage. The following are the percent reductions for 3 batches at each of 4 preselected blends: Blend 1234 25.6 25.2 20.8...

An investigation is conducted to determine if the exposure of women to atomic fallout influences the rate of birth defects. A sample of 500 children born to mothers who were exposed to the atomic explosion in Hiroshima was studied. A sample of 400 children from a Japanese island far removed from the site of the atomic explosion formed the control group. A site investigation was conducted to determine the suitability of the material from a borrow pit for a gravel road construction. A 174.33 mm (internal diameter) thin-walled sampling tube was pushed into the bottom of a trial pit and a 218.72 mm long undisturbed specimen, weighing 4802.9 g, was obtained. When dried in the oven, the specimen weighed 4382.99 g. The specific gravity of the soil grains was measured and found to be Gs = 2.66, Determine the following: the...
