= 1/(1-p), where p = extent of reaction or extent of polymerization

The number average molecular weight (Mn) of an equimolar mixture of adipic acid and hexamethylene diamine can be represented as shown below.

Mn = M0*, where M0 = molecular weight of repeating monomer unit, i.e. 226 g mol-1

(The repeating monomer unit: -C(=O)-(CH2)4-C(=O)-NH-(CH2)6-NH-)

(i) p = 0.5

= 1/(1-0.5)

i.e. = 1/0.5, i.e. 2

i.e. Mn = 226*2, i.e. 452 g mol-1

(ii) p = 0.8

= 1/(1-0.8)

i.e. = 1/0.2, i.e. 5

And Mn = 226*5, i.e. 1130 g mol-1

(iii) p = 0.9

= 1/(1-0.9)

i.e. = 1/0.1, i.e. 10

i.e. Mn = 226*10, i.e. 2260 g mol-1

(iv) p = 0.95

= 1/(1-0.95)
