Calculate the pH of a 0.100M NaOCl salt solution. Ka for hypochlorous acid, HOCl, is 3.5x10-8

Calculate the pH of a 0.100M NaOCl salt solution. Ka for hypochlorous acid, HOCl, is 3.5x10-8

Solutions

Expert Solution

concentration of NaOCl = 0.100 M

Ka of HOCl = 3.5 x 10^-8

Kb = 2.857 x 10^-7

OCl-   +   H2O   ----------------> HOCl   + OH-

0.1                                               0            0

0.10 - x                                        x             x

Kb = x^2 / 0.1 - x

2.857 x 10^-7 = x^2 / 0.1 - x

x = 1.689 x 10^-4

[OH-] = 1.689 x 10^-4 M

pOH = -log (1.689 x 10^-4 ) = 3.77

pH = 10.23
